Wind Up

This project derived from looking into the physical and emotional aspect of 'wind up'. However after experimenting with playing braille messages through a music box, we came up with a series of dot that could be positioned above a line of braille that would indicate the tone of voice of what was being said. So when the message was played the listener could here the added rises and dips in tone and could therefore indicate prosody. This is otherwise near impossible with the current system.

Rock, Paper, Scissors

This brief required us to make a comment on the future through the medium of typography. 'Rock, paper, scissors' was our chosen subject and our view of the future of this game was that it was going to become, like a lot of other things, virtual and 'computerised'.

The game as it is now has a very physical element and theoretically it has no limit to its scale and the amount of people that play. So if the game was played on a computer all imagination and creativity would be lost. We wanted to give the feeling of restriction within a screen and also repetition.

The layout was chosen to give the feeling of the game being scaled down and denied the ability to grow into something greater. I wanted the viewer to feel dissapointed with what they saw when they turned the page after the 3,2,1, as this is a very negative outlook on how we think the game may turn out.

House

A photograph using the philosophical idea of ‘Solipsism’ to comment on the idea of ‘house’. A theory which revolves around the idea of the singular mind existing all on its own and that everything around it, absolutely everything, is created by it.

My view of this theory is of it being very egotistical and a somewhat ignorant view on how we exist. So then I came up with an idea of taking a photograph of the said mind, only possible via some sort of physical representation, realising that this would in itself be and argument against the idea as a camera has to exist outside of the mind to take a picture of it. I then took a picture of the camera I had used to take the original photograph. This second image would then show a physical object, the first camera, housing and argument against the theory of solipsism. This argument being the undeveloped picture of the mind. The argument only being valid if the original picture remains undeveloped, as the idea of an argument against solipsism is possible but an actual one isn’t.

Sweatshop

'Shop' was simply the brief that we were given, and along with the brief we were given two words as 'inspiration' and ours were 'sweatshop' and 'thrift'.
The fact that our final outcome was based on was that the average pay for a sweatshop worker in India is 10p/item. So we set about setting up our own sweatshop, spending as little money as possible. Over the course of 3 days (or 36 hours) we succeeded in reaching our target of 300 10p cushions.
A short film was recorded over the three days and it was shown along with the sweatshop itself, wreaking of secondhand clothes and spray paint.
A smaller version of this piece was later shown and the KK outlet gallery.

Augustus

Recreating the a tall tail of our choosing. We focused on the story of 'Augustus Gloop' in the story of charlie and the chocolate factory.

'North/South'

We were asked by the brief to comment on the theoretical north/south divide in Britain. As a group we quickly started searching for a fact to base our project on and came across a study that revealed that the pace of life the the south of the country was considerably higher than in the north. This in itself may not be surprising, however this faster pace of life has resulted in a significantly rise in the rate of stress complaints and even heart trouble. So we set about physically trying to slow southerners, pin pointing londoners, down by creating office attire that forced them to slow down there pace of life.
A fashion shoot later came of this, and a 'lookbook' will follow on the near future.
